Kia-Motors-New-2021.pngHow to Replace an audi key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to control fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft reached TDC and also where the camshaft lies in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jumpy chain link in the upper chain. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit tricky since there are two connector pins, and they perform different functions but the most effective method of testing it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms when the sensor is operating at its maximum. Look replacement key for audi signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a massive drop in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, three were soaked with gazoline and the fourth one was dry. When I start the engine, there are no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th stays shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I get zero Ohm. I think the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car can start when the G28 is not plugged in and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in but it still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows an ice temperature of -49c. Also i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

I'm not certain what to do, as i think i've pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. But i am afraid I may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80 100 200, UrS and audi Tt key fob RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a wrecking yard or from a parts store. It is simple to test them to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's side). They should be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines must know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, etc. To accomplish this, it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these sensors go wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner which can lead to engine shutdown.

Some of the signs of a failed G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox, gears shifting quicker than normal, and/or a misfire when you're in gear. It is probable that your sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you encounter any of these signs. They're inexpensive and easy to locate, especially when they're a Bosch sensor like ours. Alternately, GM's version this part would be an excellent choice.

5. Tachometer

A faulty engine speed sensor could be a cause for a slew of issues with your vehicle. It's a vital component of the audi lost key's transmission as it sends information to the ECU about how fast or slow the vehicle's crankshaft is turning. This sensor can cause the transmission to fail and other car components to be affected.

It sends a signal via gray wire to ECU pin T55/49. The ECU then processes this signal to regulate fuel, timig and boost as well as transmitting it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by examining the continuity of the sensor to the tachometer. Additionally, you can examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. There should be an average resistance of 1000 ohms between these two points. This is a common component across the audi Smart key replacement 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC to the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU. Good parts could be found in wrecking yards.
