Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission over the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 via the grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can activate spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails the ECU will throw an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper timing chain. However the code will not appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test since there are various connector pins, and each has its own functions. The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read approximately 1000 ohms when it is in full operation. Check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll i had a big cut in power like the engine is running out of gas or the injectors are not firing any more. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, three were soaked with gazoline and the 4th one was dry. When I crank the engine, there are no sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline pop out, but the 4th stays closed. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 i get 0ohm. I assume that the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset PID without success. The replacement car key audi will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it works fine when the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue persists at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars but the actual pressure is 0.

I don't know what to do. I believe that I've eliminated everything else. I'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate an extra in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is simple to test them: simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines requires to know the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, etc. In order to do this it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). 5. Tachometer
